Extract from:
The Stamford Mercury
April 1816.

Rufus Martin was a labourer in the employ of Mr. Marfleet at Somerton Castle. On the last Saturday in April he and two others took teams of horses and waggons into Newark. On the return journey, leaving the town at a very quick rate one of them had the folly to endeavour to drive past the team before him and during the race Rufus, aged 36, fell under the waggon wheels and was killed on the spot. He left a young wife and four children.
