	Champion Leading Rein/first Ridden Pony was finally won by Merivale Park Masquerade (Taryn Walsh) and reserve went to Oaklands Park Phantom of the Opera (Kate Marfleet ).

Canadian Hackney Horse

The first Hackney bearing the herd name MARFLEET that the Canadian Hackney Society has on record is a purebred chestnut coloured mare named MARFLEET LADY ELEANOR. She was bred by and born the property of a gentleman called John Partington from Marfleet, Hull, England. Her Great Britain registration number is 28008 and she was foaled in 1953, sired by Winestead Marmion (Great Britain registration number 15219). Winstead Marmion was a native of England and, as far as is known, never went to Canada, although several of his offspring were imported into that country. MARFLEET LADY ELEANOR was imported to Canada on the 7th June, 1956, by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ryan of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She was then registered under the Canadian Hackney Society registration number -F2507-.

On page Horses of the Dutch -M-RIJVERENIGING (This link no longer valid - 08/03/2008)" under the heading: "----------M -Adresoverzicht Rijverenigingen" there is the following entry: Marfleet R.J.V. and an address in Rotterdam. On page Verenigingen NBVR (accessed on the 6/3/99) under the heading: "VERENIGINGEN" the entry reads: Marfleet, R.J.V. and an address in Heerjansdam. Martin v. Wettum informs me that R.J.V. stands for *Rij- en Jacht Vereniging* which is translated as: Horseriding and Hunting Club. Marfleet in this context is the name of the club and it takes its name from a stud in England. In the case of other names on the page, they relate to the village where the club is residenced. English Hackney Horse

Barbara Harcourt-Wood (1909-1999) owned a pure-bred Hackney pony registered as Marfleet Furious - though she called him The Mad Mullah. He had killed a pedestrian when being driven down Regent Street, and few people wanted such a wild pony; but his tremendous energy suited his owner down to the ground.

I am also grateful to Elizabeth Ann Ashbridge for the following information regarding Marfleet hackney horses:
All these horses were bred by my great uncle John Partington of Marfleet, Hull, East Yorkshire. Marfleet was one of the prefixes he used.
The Marfleet Carriage Works is run by my brother Geoffrey Rider and he used Marfleet because of the family connection. Incidentally after my uncle's death in the 60's the prefix was used by the Hack family in the Netherlands.

Argentinian Connection?

The MARFLEET Society Newsletter (Vol.1.9.62. - July, 1978) carried a report submitted by D.H. Marfleet that the race card for the S. Anita Handicap on the 9th March, 1978, included a horse with the name MARFLEET. The race for which the horse was entered was over one and one-sixteenth miles, and for four year olds and up. The horse came from Argentina and had had three races in America.

The Hackney in New Zealand - History

In 1970 long time Hackney breeders and enthusiasts Jim and Ray Lilley leased the English horse Hurstwood Sultan for two years from his Australian importer and used him across some of their mares by their old English horse Marfleet Baronet who had arrived in New Zealand in 1949.
