Grande Prairie - Another Pioneering MARFLEET
(Based on an article which first appeared in the MARFLEET Society Newsletter, Vol. 1. No.12. Page 92)
In the fall of 1978 Charles Creasey MARFLEET was up in the Peace River Country and whilst there checked on an Alfred MARFLEET whom he had heard was up there. Charles says: Alfred MARFLEET came up the trail with other pioneers in 1910, a young man near 20 years, filed and got a homestead and proved up. When the first war started Alfred joined up and went overseas. At the end of the war he came back to his homestead. After a few years a hospital was built (the Pioneer Hospital, Grande Prairie, was opened on the 16th June, 1914) and Alfred went to work there. He lived with another fellow for quite some time. While at the hospital he met Kate who also worked there and they became married. He sold the homestead and acquired more land on the outskirts of Grande Prairie. On this place he was a neighbour of Mrs. CARVETH's father and she knew them quite well. There is a picture of Alfred and Kate MARFLEET in the book 'Pioneers of the Peace' published by Grande Prairie and District Old Timers' Association. Others mention of him being on the trail with them, but no one seems to know what happened to them. Alfred and Kate had no children, they said. " Katherine Elizabeth MARFLEET died in June 1943 at the age of 63 years and is buried in Grande Prairie Cemetery Alfred David MARFLEET died at the age of 71 years in Saanich, British Columbia on the 11-01-1953 having survived Kate by ten years. |
